01. RELATIONSHIPS ARE EVERYTHING
We’ve made a lot of great work. But we’re most proud of the strong friendships we’ve made with our dedicated staff (past and present), our loyal clients and the talented crews and models we work with.
02. BE A GOOD BUSINESS
Starting out, we prioritised volume over value. Everyone wants more for less, and in the retail industry especially, it’s increasingly harder to make money. Do the job properly and people will happily pay you properly. It took a while, but now we know the difference between revenue and profit.
03. PLAY THE LONG GAME
In the advertising sector, you’re lucky to hold on to a client for 3 years, in fashion it’s even less.
We’re proud of our long-standing client relationships. That’s because we concentrate on delivering on every campaign while providing longer-term strategic and creative advice.
04. IT'S A CREATIVE BUSINESS, NOT FINE ART
We’ve always been respectful of the responsibility and investment our brands put in us. We are paid for our opinion, but will always do what our client wants. Many creative businesses may disagree but what we do has significant financial impacts and our client’s instinct has greater value than creative ego.
05. BUILD YOUR BRAND
We’re in the business of building brands makers but often our own brand often takes the back seat. It’s always hard to find the time, but it’s essential that our staff,
our clients and the general market understand who you
are and what makes us different.
06. INVESTING PAYS OFF
Our accountant often scratches his head. But whenever we’ve put our own money into a client’s photoshoot budget, it’s paid off. When you end up with a better result, these investments help secure staff and clients.
07. CREATE A CULTURE
We’re a small business that treats all our colleagues like family. A stocked kitchen, annual inspiration trips, great parties… these are the things people relish, the things they will talk about to others, the things they miss when they leave. After all, we spend more time with our colleagues than our loved ones.
08. BRING IT IN HOUSE
Retouching in-house added a competitive point-of-difference. Now we do video editing and animation within our four walls. Owning these skills allows us more creative control, provides faster turn-around and greater profitability.
09. THE BAD TIMES WILL PASS
There are always highs and lows. In a small business, the lows really hurt. The loss of one big client can impact on staff, so when the GFC happened we nearly closed the doors. Amazingly all staff volunteered to go down to 4 days to save jobs. It was an incredible commitment to the business and pretty soon we returned to 5 days a week. It showed me if you persevere there’s always light at the end of the tunnel.
10. WORK HARDER
Harder than everyone else. We know for a fact that we work more hours than our competitors. It comes from passion. There’s always a sexy new competitor out there, so your work ethic needs to be consistent and tireless. Time to get back to work…
